ASTHMA TRAINING
JUNE 2022 - CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE UPDATED ADVICE ON THE DELIVERY OF FIRST AID FROM ASIC
23rd June 2022
The AISC (Australian Industry & Skills Committee) wishes to advise Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) of the following advice in relation to the delivery of first aid training.
On the 30th May 2022, the first aid IRC (Industry Reference Committee) discussed the current reasonable adjustments implemented for the global pandemic following a request from the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) to reconsider the current advice. From these discussions, the first aid IRC has advised AISC that all reasonable adjustments implemented during the pandemic should be removed before the 01st of September 2022. This means that training and assessment activities undertaken during First Aid and CPR courses will revert to pre-covid conditions.
Practical hands-on skills should NOT be taught ONLINE.
The practical elements of first aid MUST continue to be taught by all training providers. At the time of this notification, no Registered Training Provider (RTO) had been exempt from their obligation to meet the Performance Evidence (Practical hands-on components) of any first aid course in lieu of an online course. First aid should never be taught 100% online. For more information…click here.

(22556VIC – COURSE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF ASTHMA RISKS AND EMERGENCIES IN THE WORKPLACE)
STUDENT INVESTMENT: In-Class: 1 hour + Online (Personal Study): Between 30 minutes to 1 hour*
This unit provides you with the skills and knowledge required to develop an asthma management plan and provide asthma-related first aid in your workplace. This unit is required by any person working as early learning, kindergarten, primary or secondary school educator or a childcare worker within Victoria. Unlike many other courses, we don’t just cover basic information regarding asthma, our qualified trainer(s) deep dive into specific asthma-related scenarios.
Best of all, our approach to your training ensures that you will learn techniques and methods that can be used in real-world situations, not just in a simulated workplace or classroom.
KEY INFORMATION
In accordance with the children’s services industry requirements and the Children’s Services regulations 2009 (Victorian Regulations), staff within a licensed children’s services centre who care for or educate children must, at minimum, undertake refresher training every 3 years. However, this is a recommendation only, it is known that individual organisations within Victoria require their staff to undertake refresher training annually or bi-annually. As with any regulation, it is up to the individual organisation to conduct a risk analysis of their own business, look at their staff’s exposure levels to enrolled children with Asthma and determine when training will be required.
As stated within the Victorian regulations, all staff on duty whenever children are being cared for or educated must have undertaken training in the administration of the adrenaline auto-injection device and CPR at least every 12 months.
*The actual face-to-face in-class delivery time will vary depending on class discussions and participant numbers. We expect that your class will only take 1 hour (face to face) to complete; however, we ask that all our students allow a maximum of 1.5 hours in their schedules, just in case. 🙂
*The time required to complete our online (personal study) component will also vary between 30 minutes to an average of 1 hour. The actual time investment will depend on your previous experience and knowledge of asthma management and on how much time you take to go through the extra learning materials available.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions on this course; please click on any questions below to expand the content.
WHY DOES THIS COURSE HAVE A SELF-PACED (ONLINE) PERSONAL STUDY COMPONENT?
Most people who are looking for asthma training are unaware that this nationally accredited course which has been accredited by the Victorian Registration and Qualification Authority (VRQA) and has, in fact, been written as a 4-hour course; therefore, no training provider should deliver this course in one hour without a personal study component. Like a wise TV Judge once said, “if it sounds too good to be true, then it is!” Think about it…. how do you fit 4 hours of information into 1 hour without homework OR, more importantly, how do you fit 4 hours of learning into 1 hour as some providers are claiming?
For this reason, we have developed an interactive, informative and enjoyable online personal study component allowing you to complete all the non-practical yet important components of your asthma course in your own time at home or at work. Once you have completed the learning materials, you will be asked to complete a small quiz to confirm your understanding of what you have just learned.
WHAT IF I AM NOT CONFIDENT USING A COMPUTER?
For those who are not confident with a computer, it is recommended that you call our office before enrolling. We may be able to arrange for you to complete your personal study component online at our training centre after your face-to-face session.
WHAT IF I DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER, ACCESS TO A PRINTER, OR INTERNET?
Never fear; we have a solution for you. For those who do not have a computer, please call our office before enrolling. We will need to arrange for you to complete your personal study component online at our training centre after your face-to-face session using our computers.
WHAT IS INVOLVED WITH THE 1HR IN-CLASS (FACE-TO-FACE) TRAINING SESSION?
The face-to-face training session is a fun, interactive, hands-on session that covers all the practical elements of the asthma course. Information is presented to you in a conversational delivery approach, with lots of real-world scenarios, enhanced video, modern presentations and, most importantly, a direct focus on practical, easy-to-implement approaches and techniques to first aid.
