FIRST AID TRAINING FOR EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE MELBOURNE

JUNE 2022 - CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE UPDATED ADVICE ON THE DELIVERY OF FIRST AID FROM ASIC

23rd June 2022

The AISC (Australian Industry & Skills Committee) wishes to advise Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) of the following advice in relation to the delivery of first aid training.

On the 30th May 2022, the first aid IRC (Industry Reference Committee) discussed the current reasonable adjustments implemented for the global pandemic following a request from the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) to reconsider the current advice. From these discussions, the first aid IRC has advised AISC that all reasonable adjustments implemented during the pandemic should be removed before the 01st of September 2022. This means that training and assessment activities undertaken during First Aid and CPR courses will revert to pre-covid conditions.

Practical hands-on skills should NOT be taught ONLINE.

The practical elements of first aid MUST continue to be taught by all training providers. At the time of this notification, no Registered Training Provider (RTO) had been exempt from their obligation to meet the Performance Evidence (Practical hands-on components) of any first aid course in lieu of an online course. First aid should never be taught 100% online. For more information…click here.

UNITS OF COMPETENCE (SUBJECTS) AND COURSE DURATION

HLTAID012 – PROVIDE FIRST IN AN EDUCATION AND CARE SETTING
(Includes HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation & HLTAID011 Provide First Aid)

STUDENT INVESTMENT: In-Class: 7 hrs & Online (Personal Study) 30 minutes to 3 hours*

This unit provides you with the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

This unit applies to a range of workers in an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school-age children.

Best of all, our approach to your training ensures that you will learn techniques and methods that can be used in real-world situations and not just in a simulated first aid scenario.

KEY INFORMATION

In accordance with the ARC guidelines and Safe Work Australia, you will need to undertake annual refresher training on the HLTAID009 unit (CPR component) of your first aid certification. You may also need to undertake annual or bi-annual asthma and anaphylaxis training.

PLEASE NOTE: Every employer is different. Depending on your organisation’s policies, this unit of competency may contribute toward approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011). If not, you will also need to enrol into the 22556VIC Course in the Management of Asthma Risks & Emergencies in the Workplace course AND the 225578VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis course. You will have the option of enrolling in both these extra courses during this course’s enrollment process! If you are unsure, please check with your employer.

*The actual face-to-face in-class delivery time will vary depending on class discussions and participant numbers. We expect that your class will only take 7 hours (face to face) to complete; however, we ask that all our students allow a maximum of 7.5 hours in their schedules, just in case. 🙂

*The time required to complete our online (personal study) component will also vary between 30 minutes to an average of 3 hours. The actual time investment will depend on your previous experience and knowledge with first aid and on how much time you take to go through the extra learning materials available.

PRE-REQUISITES & COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

PRE-REQUISITES

It is recommended that you provide the following:

  1. Working pen and highlighters for use on the course.
  2. An active and working email account – is required in order to complete your online (personal study component)

The training offered by Intelligent Training Solutions provides the skills and knowledge to administer first aid properly but does not constitute a medical qualification. Intelligent Training Solutions accepts no responsibility for the subsequent actions of participants.

First Aid training involves moderate physical activity, including kneeling and bending. Intelligent Training Solutions does not accept any responsibility for any harm suffered by you as a result of your participation in the course. If you have any special needs (including those in relation to Language, Literacy or Numeracy), a relevant disability or condition, or any other concerns, you should raise these prior to enrolment.

COURSE OUTLINES

Even though first aid is a serious topic, we pride ourselves on our fun, practical and engaging format that simulates real worlds scenarios. Our courses contain a lot of valuable video content to ensure participants remain engaged rather than listening to war stories of the trainer’s past experiences. Unlike many other first aid providers, all our trainers are highly qualified, with our senior trainers and our program coordinator qualified as division 1 nurses, emergency service workers, and paramedics. Our standards are high to ensure that the information you receive during this course is current, practical, and not just taught by a ‘first aider’. We believe in providing highly qualified trainers with real and current industry experience.

There are many topics within this first aid course. For a full list of the information taught and assessed, we recommend viewing the HLTAID012 criteria upon which our course is based.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions on this course; please click on any questions below to expand the content.

WHY DOES THIS COURSE HAVE A SELF-PACED (ONLINE) PERSONAL STUDY COMPONENT?

Most people who are looking for a first-aid certificate are unaware that this nationally accredited course which has been written by the Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council for the Department of Education and Training has, in fact, been written as an 18-hour course; therefore, no training provider in Australia should deliver this course in one day without a personal study component. Like a wise TV Judge once said, “if it sounds too good to be true, then it is!” Think about it…. how do you fit 18 hours of information into 6.5 hours without homework OR, more importantly, how do you fit 18 hours of learning into 3 hours as some providers are claiming?

For this reason, we have developed an interactive, informative and enjoyable online personal study component split into nine topics that allows you to complete all the non-practical yet important components of your first aid course in your own time at home or at work. Our online component contains videos, animated videos and presentations that guide you through each topic. Once you have completed the learning materials for each topic, you will be asked to complete a small quiz to confirm your understanding of what you have just learned.

NOTE: Each topic has a quiz. The number of questions in a quiz varies between 6 to 16, depending on the topic.

WHAT IF I AM NOT CONFIDENT USING A COMPUTER?

For those who are not confident with a computer, Intelligent Training Solutions has a more traditional approach available to you.

Upon request, we will send you a PDF download of the first aid course student learner guide and student assessment, free of charge. You simply print the student assessment and write down your answers to complete the personal study component. Once you have answered all the questions, you can submit your assessment to your trainer on the day of your in-class training session. You can also mail your completed assessment to the mailing address we will provide you.

Please Note: We will always recommend you attempt to complete your personal study component online. Our team of trainers and administrators are available on our phones to support you in gaining access to your Learner Portal.

WHAT IF I DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER, ACCESS TO A PRINTER, OR INTERNET?

Never fear; we have a solution for you if you don’t have access to a computer, printer or the internet. Call our office, and our team will arrange to send you a printed copy of the course Learner Guide and Personal Study Assessment at a cost of around $26.95. Best of all, you get to keep the Learner Guide, we will just need the completed personal study assessment.

WHAT IS INVOLVED WITH THE 7HR IN-CLASS (FACE-TO-FACE) TRAINING SESSION?

LIVE STUDENT FEEDBACK FROM GOOGLE

We strongly recommend checking out the reviews past students have left us on Google. We believe that live reviews and ratings speak volumes compared to the static snippets of favourable reviews most other training providers put on their websites. Below is a live feed from our Google reviews. This is an unfiltered feed. The reviews listed below are from students of every course we deliver. If you wish to find a specific review on a course you are interested in, you may need to look through the list. 🙂
